Meet Gabby.  Gabby is a 4 month old mastiff/shepherd mix.  Unfortunately, this little girl wasn't adopted at the Rushville Indiana animal shelter and was euthanized by a cruel stick to the heart done with a hypodermic needle.  Four days later, the shelter assistant went to the walk in cooler to dispose of an animal that had been hit by a car.  Imagine the surprise she got when this little puppy popped her head up out of a barrel!  Gabby had been under dosed and lay covered for four days in freezing temperatures under the bodies of other dead animals.  Shelter worker, Jamie Glandon, was instructed by the Mayor Bob Bridges to take Gabby to the local vet and have her put to sleep the proper way.  Jamie refused and took Gabby to a vet for medical care instead, and ten days later she was  placed in rescue.

Jamie Glandon

Jamie's courageous decision has resulted in her being placed on administrative leave and forbidden to go near the shelter, or be involved in shelter business.  The city who looked upon this dog as "trash" is now demanding her back as evidence!!  Jamie faces losing her job and is being treated as a criminal for her act of bravery and compassion.

How You Can Help

Please let Rushville's Mayor Bob Bostic, know where you stand. Tell Mayor Bostic that the world is watching. E-mail him at: mayor@cityofrushville.com. Telephone him at (765)932-3735. Offer solutions and encourage change. Demand that pound assistant Jamie Glandon stay re-instated at the Rushville Animal Shelter, without harassment or fear of reprisal. Without intervention, there is grave concern about how this chapter will end for companion animals interred at the Rushville Animal Shelter. Please read and sign the petition at:

Letters to new Mayor Bostic Repeatedly Ignored!!

This first letter was sent to Mayor Bostic because he requested that the voices be quelled.  All we asked of him to accomplish this was a written public statement making clear his intentions for the shelter and a basic plan for shelter reform.  We also requested a meeting to offer solution and help.

Dear Mayor Bostic,
My name is Linda, co sponsor of the Justice for Gabby website.  I've just spoken with Jamie and she has made known your request to have the emails and calls to your office stop.

I want to make clear that Jamie is in no way affiliated with this movement, nor does she take part in our efforts.  Honestly, she just wants to help the animals in the shelter find new homes and so do we.

Personally, I have volunteered at the Rushville Shelter for almost 3 years.  Making the 150 mile round trip from Cincinnati to transport animals from your shelter to no kill shelter/rescues elsewhere.  Many of the rescuers, like myself, would like nothing better than to resume saving Rushville's unwanted pets.

But we must be part of a solution, not a band aid on the problem. The results of the previous administration's investigation into the practices of the shelter are contrary to what many of us have actually seen taking place there.  Jamie has been an asset to the shelter since her days of volunteering, and she is an even greater asset as an employee.  I'd wager that more animals have been placed in her years of effort than all the years prior to that combined.

With all due respect to Mayor Bridges, his unwillingness to address the issue and put forth a plan of action has not helped the situation.  We have much anticipated your taking office, hoping for a change in policy.  Much of the backlash you are experiencing is inherited from your predecessor and for that I apologize.

Jamie has very positive things to say about you Mayor Bostic, and the new Shelter Director. It is my understanding that things will be changing for the better.  Please, make a public statement about your plans for the shelter.  Since you have only just taken office nobody expects a step by step plan, just please make your intentions known. I promise to post and broadcast your statement far and wide.   It will greatly help in quelling the flood of emails and calls.

We would like to schedule a meeting with you, at your convenience, to discuss ways in which we can focus our energy on resuming volunteer efforts at the Rushville Shelter.  We are committed, with money, materials and time to help the shelter become a source of pride for your community.

With Kindest Regards,
Linda Wissel

Second Letter:

Mayor Bostic,

How charges were not brought in the case of Gabby is beyond my comprehension.  The City and Jack Hill were guilty of at least several of the charges below in just the instance of Gabby.  Not to mention the three previous botched euthanasia attempts that were documented.

Reform your shelter.  End the inhumane euthanasia practices.  That is the only thing that will "quell the voices".  I've written previously asking for a public statement to help stop the calls to your office, it was ignored.  We have given the new administration plenty of time to at least come out publicly with their intentions regarding the shelter.  Having not heard a word in that respect, it appears the philosophy is "business as usual".

I will begin blasting out emails and bulletins requesting people once again flood your office with calls and email.

Sincerely,
Linda Wissel

Hey Rushville, This is how you conduct an investigation!  This man lost his license and was arrested for the same thing Dog Warden Jack Hill done!

GALLATIN, Tenn. -- Criminal charges have been placed against a Sumner County veterinarian after he used a controversial method to put animals to death.  Dr. William Baber was arrested Thursday morning and charged with 12 misdemeanor offenses, including animal cruelty.  The Channel 4 I-team's investigation into euthanasia at the Sumner County animal shelter prompted action by the district attorney's office.  Reporter Jeremy Finley first exposed what was happening at the shelter in November.  Baber already had his license suspended and his practice temporarily shut down in December.

"When we found out about the videos, once they were shown on TV, I asked for an investigation, " said District Attorney Ray Whitley.
Baber was seen in undercover video, first obtained by the I-team, putting to death animals using a heart shot method without sedation.  "Sometimes [the animals] would live as long as 30 minutes, so that's pretty cruel," said Whitley.  The misdemeanor charges filed on Thursday reflect everything the I-team first reported.  Channel 4 showed how the cats were treated, which resulted in two counts of animal cruelty.  The station exposed the method the dogs were put to death, which resulted in two more cruelty counts.  Also reported in Channel 4's stories was that there wasn't any indication of Baber checking for signs of life afterward. This resulted in charges of four counts of violating the humane death act.  The fact that many of the animals weren't sedated led to two counts of violating the state's euthanasia law.
Finally, Baber will face two counts of falsifying government records.  Baber stands by his statement at a disciplinary hearing that he was unaware of state law that prohibited heart shot euthanasias without sedation.  "If I had known about the statute change, that would have solved a lot of this," said Baber.  Baber and his attorney said Thursday that they are evaluating their options.  The board ruled in December that Baber cannot resume his practice until April and cannot perform euthanasia at any shelter for five years.
